“The city of Vallauris is renowned for its arts and crafts, and especially for pottery and ceramic, that fuelled the tourist shops of the 1960s. In the 20th century, Picasso played an important role in the arts and crafts of the city with its ceramic production. The presence of Picasso amplified the movement and attracted other artists, painters or sculptors who came to try the ceramics. Picasso stimulated, through his creative power, the emergence of real potters. The first national ceramics competition was created in 1966 with the aim of affirming and maintaining the quality of the production. The exhibitions multiplied, devoted to the history of the arts of fire and the first biennale was organized in 1968. It is still in Vallauris that is held the International Biennale of Contemporary Ceramics, an exhibition of contemporary ceramics.”
