History: “Founded in 1947 in Caldas da Rainha, a city with a long ceramic tradition, Secla Portugal was an art pottery workshop that established itself since the beginning as an innovative company, investing in modern production and giving primacy to design. The factory benefited from the post-war economic growth in Europe. Most of the production was exported to the USA and UK. Its founder, Joaquim Pinto Ribeiro, used to challenge plastic artists and architects to explore ideas in unique pieces and small series. Secla employed such artists as Julio Pomar, José Aurélio Hansi Stael, António Quadros, Ian Hird and Ferreira da Silva. In 1990 Secla had 700 employes. During next years the company struggled hard with challenges of globalization and Asian competition. Because of falling demand, production was finally stopped on June 30, 2008.”
